Quantum Computer in the Solid State

International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025

QSolid researcher and European Quantum Flagship Initiative representative Prof. Tommaso Calarco enriched the German and international kick-off events of the International Quantum Year.

On January 14, 2025, the German Physical Society set the stage in Berlin for the national opening ceremony of the International Quantum Year 2025. The event featured an engaging panel discussion with QSolid member Prof. Tommaso Calarco from Forschungszentrum Jülich among the distinguished speakers. In his contribution, Calarco explained how quantum computers work, reflected on when and in which areas useful quantum computing – including added value for society as a whole – could be expected and what research policy claims the quantum technologies field makes.

Building on the momentum from Berlin, Prof. Calarco further contributed his expertise at the United Nations kick-off event for the International Quantum Year in Paris on February 4 - 5, 2025. During another dynamic panel discussion, Calarco – who is one of the founding fathers of the European Quantum Flagship Initiative – provided valuable perspectives on the role of quantum technologies in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025 was proclaimed to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of quantum mechanics. It aims to raise public awareness about the transformative potential of quantum science and its applications, engaging communities worldwide in a year-long celebration of innovation and collaboration. This initiative, endorsed by the United Nations, brings together scientists, educators, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore how quantum technologies can shape our future.
